The itinerary intentionally combines different types of waterways. Alappuzha offers the classic kettuvallam/houseboat landscape, Kumarakom sits beside Vembanad Lake, while Munroe Island provides a more intimate canal and village experience. Kerala Tourism specifically describes Munroe Island as lying at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River.

Arrival in Kochi
Explore Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, with time for the historic streets, colonial architecture and waterfront. Visit the Chinese fishing nets and enjoy an evening walk beside the harbour. If your arrival time permits, a Kathakali performance makes a good cultural introduction to Kerala.
Kochi → Kumarakom
Check into a lakeside or backwater resort and spend the afternoon experiencing the quieter side of Kerala. A shikara or traditional boat ride is an excellent introduction to the waterways without repeating the overnight houseboat experience planned for the following day.
Depending on your interests and available time, visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, explore nearby village landscapes or simply relax beside Vembanad Lake.
Kumarakom → Alappuzha | Overnight Houseboat
Alappuzha (Alleppey) for one of the signature experiences of the entire journey—an overnight cruise aboard a traditional Kerala houseboat.
Board around midday, depending on your operator, and begin cruising through a landscape of canals, lagoons, coconut palms, villages and paddy fields.
The journey provides glimpses of everyday backwater life: small boats carrying residents between villages, fishermen working along the waterways, homes beside canals and vast stretches of agricultural land. Kettuvallam houseboats as one of the most popular ways to experience Alappuzha's canals and waterways.
Alappuzha → Kollam / Ashtamudi Lake
Wake up surrounded by the peaceful Alappuzha backwaters and enjoy the final morning section of your houseboat experience before checking out.
Continue south towards Kollam, where the character of Kerala's backwaters changes again. The centrepiece here is Ashtamudi Lake, one of Kerala's major backwater systems. Instead of repeating another overnight houseboat, use the afternoon for a shorter lake cruise or simply stay at a waterfront property overlooking the lake.
Kollam → Munroe Island → Varkala
Start early for one of the most interesting experiences of the tour: Munroe Island. Unlike the broad lakes and houseboat channels around Alappuzha, Munroe Island is particularly suited to exploring smaller waterways. Take a guided canoe or country-boat cruise through narrow canals bordered by coconut palms, homes, small bridges and village landscapes.
After the cruise, continue south to Varkala. Check into your hotel and spend the evening walking along Varkala Cliff and watching sunset over the Arabian Sea.
Varkala & Coastal Kerala
Day 6 is intentionally relaxed.
Spend the morning at Varkala Beach and explore the dramatic laterite cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea. Walk along the cliff-top promenade, visit cafés and viewpoints, or simply enjoy time beside the beach.
Travellers wanting additional sightseeing can explore the surrounding Varkala area, while those seeking a slower holiday can reserve the afternoon for Ayurveda, yoga or relaxation.
Varkala → Thiruvananthapuram | Departure
If your flight or train departs later in the day, use the available time for limited sightseeing in Kerala's capital. Depending on your interests and opening conditions, you can explore the city's heritage attractions before continuing to the airport or railway station.
