About Periyar Tiger Reserve
Deep in the Western Ghats of Kerala, Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady is one of the state’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. Forested mountains, grasslands and the waters of Periyar Lake create a landscape dramatically different from Kerala’s beaches and backwaters.
The wider Periyar landscape covers around 777 sq km, including approximately 360 sq km of evergreen forest. At its heart lies an artificial lake of roughly 26 sq km, formed following construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam.
Although the tiger gives the reserve its name, visitors should not arrive expecting guaranteed tiger sightings. Periyar is better experienced as a complete forest ecosystem where the scenery, birds, mammals and lake are all part of the attraction.
Wildlife at Periyar

Asian elephants are among the animals most closely associated with the reserve. Visitors may also encounter sambar deer, gaur, wild boar and numerous species of birds.

Boating on Periyar Lake

Visitors should report at Anavachal Parking Area one hour before departure and at the boat landing 30 minutes before the scheduled trip. The boat landing is approximately 4 km from the parking area, with reserve buses providing the transfer.

Best Time to Visit Periyar Tiger Reserve
October to March is generally a convenient period for visiting Thekkady because conditions are often comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
The warmer months can still be rewarding for wildlife observation around water sources, although daytime temperatures may be less comfortable.
The monsoon transforms the forest into an intensely green landscape, but rainfall can affect trekking and outdoor programmes.
For a conventional first visit, an early-morning boating slot can be particularly appealing because of the atmosphere, softer light and generally cooler conditions.
How Much Time Should You Spend at Periyar?
Allow around 3–5 hours if your main plan is entering the reserve and taking a Periyar Lake boat trip.
Remember that visitors must arrive well before the scheduled boating departure, and transportation between Anavachal and the boat landing also takes time.
If you are booking a guided nature walk, bamboo rafting or another ecotourism programme, consider dedicating most or all of the day to Periyar.
